Sabdapalon was a priest and advisor of Brawijaya V, the last emperor of the Hindu-Buddhist dynasty Majapahit of Java and is mentioned in Darmagandhul, a Javanese literary work. In 1578, on his king's conversion to Islam in 1478, he was said to have cursed him and then pledged that he would return after 500 years, during which time the island had been ravaged by political corruption and natural disasters, to expel Islam and restore the Hindu-Buddha Javanese religion, known as Buda, and civilisation.
